How Well Can You Read Other People’s Emotions?

How do you take the emotional temperature of your team or organization? If you could, how might it help you to communicate more effectively?
Peoples’ eyes are highly expressive. They provide valuable clues about their emotions in play.
No Whisky Required
I’ve shared Kenny Rogers The Gambler music video. And the 2nd verse lyrics about the advice from the old gambler about the value of reading people’s eyes.
I believe the words provide us lessons beyond the poker table.
Verse 2
He said, “Son, I’ve made a life
Out of readin’ people’s faces
And knowin’ what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes.
So if you don’t mind my sayin’
I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I’ll give you some advice.”
Is it possible that, like the old gambler, we all can make a life out or reading people’s eyes?
Here’s an opportunity for you to test your ability for reading people’s eyes.
A Different Kind of "Eye Test"
The New York Times site has an on-line survey to test how well you read the emotions of others. I invite you to take The Well Quiz. It’s based on an assessment tool developed by University of Cambridge professor Simon Baron-Cohen.
The test is a series of multiple choice questions based on photographs of people’s eyes in different emotional states. So it adds new meaning to the term “eye test“.
If you’re open to an eye-opening experience, I recommend that you use the button below to take the eye test.
My apologies to those viewing the test on a mobile device. It works. Just a bit cumbersome. Still insightful.
