font-family: verdana; font-size: 85%;\">Traveling American roadways this summer, we\u2019re seeing something new in the continuing evolution of an American icon. <\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_o3S8RVd4faA\/Sn-7QXTttlI\/AAAAAAAAAFc\/O4GMz-i6Yxg\/s1600-h\/HI-74.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368215170657924690\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 103px; height: 145px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_o3S8RVd4faA\/Sn-7QXTttlI\/AAAAAAAAAFc\/O4GMz-i6Yxg\/s320\/HI-74.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/a>Road construction on Interstate 65 between Gary and Indianapolis led me to back to US 41 as an alternative route for our trip from Chicago to West Lafayette, IN.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"> Being on 41 again got me to nostalgically flash back to my childhood. In the 60s before the interstate system was built, Route 41 was our family vacation road to the Sunshine State.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">As I recall, our trips from Illinois to Florida took at least three days of driving.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">As kids, we had auto bingo, comic books and sibling bickering to pass the time in the back seat of our <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Olds 88<\/span>.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">At the end of each day of travel, we looked forward to our stay at the Holiday Inn. There was a nice dinner, a dip in the pool and a good night\u2019s sleep and pancakes the next morning before more backseat bickering.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">The mere sight of a retro Holiday Inn sign (left) brings back fond memories of our stopovers in Nashville, Birmingham and Tallahassee. And as an adult, our honeymoon stay was at a beautiful Holiday Inn resort property in the Caribbean where an icon of that original sign was mounted on the building.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_o3S8RVd4faA\/Sn-4mJVElsI\/AAAAAAAAAFM\/xcRn-lKtRHs\/s1600-h\/HI-80s.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368212246327760578\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 120px; height: 142px;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_o3S8RVd4faA\/Sn-4mJVElsI\/AAAAAAAAAFM\/xcRn-lKtRHs\/s320\/HI-80s.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Moderation<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">Or course, those big gaudy signs were softened and abbreviated over time. Municipal signage codes and changing styles made that a necessity. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">But they maintained the primary elements of the original with the same lettering, an updated star image and warm green background.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The New &#8220;H&#8221;<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">But now as we travel the homogenized commercial landscape of America, there is a new look to Holiday Inn property signage.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">It\u2019s an uninspiring <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 85%;\">H<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"> on a gradient green background that looks like it was drawn by the 60s TV character, Zoro. Or is it more like an early football goalpost? In any case, Holiday Inn has <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">re-branded<\/span> in an effort to lure more business travelers to their previously run down properties.<br \/><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_o3S8RVd4faA\/SoIIdw6DskI\/AAAAAAAAAFk\/cFvACiXG2rk\/s1600-h\/HI-09.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368863013216694850\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 127px; height: 91px;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_o3S8RVd4faA\/SoIIdw6DskI\/AAAAAAAAAFk\/cFvACiXG2rk\/s320\/HI-09.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">I admit that, although I was once a Holiday Inn stockholder, my business travel lodging preferences have migrated away from Holiday Inn in favor of Hilton\/Hampton and Marriott\/Courtyard as Holiday Inn\u2019s properties became rundown.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">But if they are looking to win me back as a business traveler,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">I question whether stripping the nostalgic connections that I have to their combination of script lettering, the star and the warm green background will help.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Communication Challenge<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">In the process of re-branding Holiday Inn to appeal to business travelers, the company is attempting to take a <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">product <\/span>literally called &#8220;Holiday&#8221; and create a new identity to attract the no-nonsense market. <\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\";font-family: verdana; font-size: 85%;\">And with with these new graphics, they&#8217;ve removed ties to the emotional elements of their brand communication that once attracted folks like me. Since buying decisions are inherently emotional, how will business travelers be attracted to the new primitive green <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">H<\/span>? I understand that they&#8217;re trying to mask <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">holiday <\/span>connotations as their new target market has a non-holiday agenda. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">With property improvements and a large enough advertising budget, perhaps they will succeed in gaining some market share with business travelers despite the loss of an emotional connection. But I would be more optimistic about their chances if their identity maintained some of those emotional ties with the company&#8217;s heritage.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">They&#8217;re not alone.<\/span><br \/>Holiday Inn&#8217;s marketers must sympathize with the ongoing challenge faced by <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Radio Shack&#8217;s<\/span> brand builders. Who would choose to buy their leading edge technology from a <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana;\">shack<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">? They&#8217;ve survived despite their name. But it make you wonder what might have been achieved without the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">shack <\/span>perception obstacle.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">New Coke Deja Vu?<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\";font-family: verdana; font-size: 85%;\">Perhaps something needed to be done to secure the future of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">America&#8217;s Innkeeper<\/span>. Will this be a bold new success story? A new case of <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana; font-size: 85%;\">The New Coke<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 85%;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;\">Volvo Convertible<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;\">Cadillac Cimarron<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"> deja vu?
