thought it would help to re-share my favorite Peter Drucker quote:<\/p><p><em><strong>&#8220;Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two\u2013and only two\u2013basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p><div style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<\/div><p>So if we can agree with Mr. Drucker that innovation is a critical component to success, we should do everything possible to foster and encourage it. Shouldn&#8217;t we? But too often, we don&#8217;t. Listed below are\u00a0 <em>20 Phrases That Kill Ideas and Innovation<\/em>.\u00a0 You might be <em>seasoned<\/em> enough to remember Deputy Barney Fife&#8217;s advice for putting a stop to undesirable behaviors when he would say:\u00a0 <em><strong>&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to nip it in the bud.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/de_P2aUZJyA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p><h2>The Top 20 Innovation Nipping Statements<\/h2><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>How many times in the course of your day or week are <strong>you <\/strong>guilty of <em>nipping innovation in the bud<\/em>?\u00a0 Do you find yourself uttering any of these <em><strong>Nip It <\/strong><\/em>phrases? They each start with <em><strong>\u201cThat\u2019s a good idea, but\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><ol><li>\u00a0It\u2019s against company policy<\/li><li>\u00a0It\u2019s not practical<\/li><li>\u00a0It\u2019s not necessary<\/li><li>\u00a0We don\u2019t have the resources<\/li><li>\u00a0It will cost too much<\/li><li>\u00a0We\u2019ve never done it that way before<\/li><li>\u00a0Our customers (clients, patients, guests, clients or even vendors) won\u2019t like it<\/li><li>\u00a0It needs more study<\/li><li>\u00a0It\u2019s not part of your job<\/li><li>\u00a0Let\u2019s do some research first<\/li><li>\u00a0Let\u2019s sit on it for a while<\/li><li>\u00a0That\u2019s not our problem<\/li><li>\u00a0The boss won\u2019t go for it<\/li><li>\u00a0The old timers won\u2019t use it<\/li><li>\u00a0It\u2019s too hard to administer<\/li><li>\u00a0Why hasn\u2019t someone else suggested it before?<\/li><li>\u00a0Let\u2019s form a committee<\/li><li>\u00a0We should wait until the economy improves<\/li><li>\u00a0Who else has tried it?<\/li><li>\u00a0Is it best practice?<\/li><\/ol><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Are any of these in your business vernacular?\u00a0 How recently have you uttered any of them? What happens when you take an idea and <em>nip it?<\/em> You prevent it from ever blossoming and eventually bearing fruit.\u00a0 As soon as the word &#8220;but&#8221; leaves your lips, you&#8217;re about to prune your innovation tree.\u00a0 So when you catch yourself beginning to utter any of these phrases, take Barney&#8217;s advice.\u00a0 Take your idea-killing thought and <em>nip it<\/em>.
