essential leadership attribute. \u00a0How essential? Let&#8217;s consider what happens when it&#8217;s absent.\r\n\r\n<strong>What do you call a leader with no integrity?<\/strong>\r\n\r\nHow about a<strong><em>\u00a0&#8220;fraud&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>? \u00a0Or <strong><em>hypocrite<\/em><\/strong>?\r\n<h2>Situational Integrity<\/h2>\r\nWe judge our leaders by their\u00a0actions. We&#8217;ve all seen\u00a0people in\u00a0leadership positions act as though\u00a0integrity can and should be turned on and off like a light switch. \u00a0They can be open and candid when it suits their purposes. \u00a0Then, manipulative and deceptive on other occasions. \u00a0Do they believe that others won&#8217;t notice? \u00a0What&#8217;s the reality? \u00a0We all come equipped with\u00a0built-in lie detectors. \u00a0Our sensors can be turned on and off and up and down. \u00a0Those sensors get turned up\u00a0when we witness <em>situational integrity<\/em>.\r\n\r\nThe belief that your integrity can be turned on or off\u00a0is\u00a0akin to believing you can be a little bit pregnant.\r\n<h2>Organizational Integrity<\/h2>\r\nThose who are familiar with ISO certification (i.e. ISO 9001) know that\u00a0the International Standards Organization (ISO) has developed standards and practices to enable establishing <strong><em>trust<\/em><\/strong> between organizations who begin business transactions as international strangers.\u00a0 Product and service organizations gain ISO certification (i.e. ISO 9001) by documenting their business processes and then install systems to assure consistent\u00a0processes.\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3654 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/iso.jpg\" alt=\"ISO 9001\" width=\"260\" height=\"119\" title=\"\">As organizations evaluate prospective international vendors, most are more inclined to <strong>trust<\/strong> those who are (ISO) certified in carefully and consistently following their established practices than those who lack that certification.\r\n\r\nIt is a formal, elaborate system to verify that, as an organization, you&#8230;\r\n<blockquote>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong><em>&#8220;Say what you do.\u00a0 And, do what you say.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/blockquote>\r\nWhen other organizations have reason to believe this is true, trust is a natural outcome.\u00a0 Certification is an organizational solution.\u00a0 What about&#8230;\r\n<h3>Establishing Personal Integrity<\/h3>\r\n<h3><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3657\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/throw.jpg\" alt=\"Throw\" width=\"280\" height=\"224\" title=\"\"><\/h3>\r\nWhile there are few formal certifications for personal integrity (like sworn oaths or security clearances), informal systems are omnipresent.\u00a0 Every personal interaction or transaction involves an informal assessment of trust.\r\n\r\nWe all have our small trusted circle.\u00a0 People who we know will keep their promises as they&#8217;ve always adhered to high ethical\u00a0standards.\r\n\r\nConversely, we&#8217;ve all heard the saying&#8230;\r\n<blockquote>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n&#8220;I Wouldn&#8217;t Trust Him any Farther than I Could Throw Him&#8221;<\/blockquote>\r\n<h3>Raising The Bar<\/h3>\r\nConsider This Definition for Personal Integrity&#8230;\r\n<blockquote>&nbsp;\r\n\r\nDoing what you say even when no one else is looking.<\/blockquote>\r\nHow many of your family, friends, acquaintances, or colleagues would place you in their inner circle of trust?\r\n\r\nHow many could call on you for help in a crisis?\r\n\r\nAs with all the components of excellence:\u00a0<strong><em>Integrity is not a tactic.\u00a0 It is a habit.\u00a0*<\/em><\/strong>\r\n<h3>\u00a0Related Articles<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/pinocchio-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pinocchio Effect<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/lip-service-and-your-reputation\/\">Lip Service and Your Reputation<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/would-you-like-lies-with-that\/\">Would You Like Lies With That?<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n* \u00a0Paraphrasing Aristotle&#8217;s quote:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;We are what we repeatedly do.
