Mindset?<\/h3>\r\nIs Miller Lite<strong> less filing<\/strong> or<strong> great tasting<\/strong>?\u00a0 Is a Certs a<strong> breath mint<\/strong> or <strong>candy mint<\/strong>?\u00a0 In all cases, the answer is &#8220;yes&#8221;.\u00a0 When it comes to improving your ability to delegate, <strong>skills<\/strong> and <strong>attitudes<\/strong> are like love and marriage: &#8220;<em>You can&#8217;t have one without the other<\/em>&#8221; <strong>*<\/strong>.\r\n<h3>Required Skills<\/h3>\r\nThere are several prerequisite skills needed to delegate:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Communication of How, What and Why: <strong><a title=\"Delegation and the Power of \u201cWhy\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/delegation-and-the-power-of-why\/\">Read More<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li>An understanding of the task at hand and it&#8217;s desired outcomes<\/li>\r\n \t<li>An understanding of the capabilities of the delegatee.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The ability to train and develop your delegatees.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>The Delegation Attitude Conundrum<\/h3>\r\nAs you seek to delegate, your strong competency and familiarity can be more of a curse than a blessing.\u00a0 Why? It fosters this potentially paralyzing<strong> self limiting belief<\/strong>:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;No one can do this as well as I can.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As long as you believe this is true. You&#8217;re right.\u00a0 And, who doesn&#8217;t like being right? Right?\u00a0 And as long as you foster this belief, you&#8217;re more inclined to simply do it yourself.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s another delegation squashing belief:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If I have someone else do it, it will take longer.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here again. You&#8217;re probably right.\u00a0 And as long as cling to this belief and avoid investing time to train and develop others, you will continue to be right.\u00a0 But at what cost?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If someone else does it, they will mess it up.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You&#8217;re right again.\u00a0 This is just the kind of mindset that creates a culture where failure is feared so much that innovation is routinely suppressed.\u00a0 To help change this mindset, I recommend my previous post on <strong><a title=\"Fear of Failure is Not an Option\" href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/fear-of-failure-is-not-an-option\/\">Fear of Failure<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Don&#8217;t you ever get tired of being so right so often?<\/h3>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/h-wheel-ms.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2518 size-full\" title=\"h-wheel-ms\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/h-wheel-ms.jpg\" alt=\"Executive Hampster Wheel\" width=\"146\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a>I believe that<strong> the need to be right<\/strong> is the cause of two afflictions: <strong><em>delegation reluctance<\/em><\/strong> and the more severe <strong><em>delegation phobia<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/strong>Either of these is proven to be hazardous to both your health and your wealth. So I ask&#8230;\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>When is it time to stop being imprisoned by your rightness?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How much has you&#8217;re do-it-yourself attitude prevented you from achieving bigger and better things?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How much are you wasting the potential resources of those around you by hoarding responsibilities?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Are you on your way to living in <em>Hamsterville<\/em>?\u00a0 It&#8217;s that place where your time is spent running on a hamster wheel while personal progress suffers when you can&#8217;t escape the routine.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">A Benchmark Example<\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2515 size-full\" title=\"bus-ms\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/bus-ms.jpg\" alt=\"School Bus\" width=\"160\" height=\"203\" \/>We&#8217;re all familiar with the responsibilities of a school principal.
