news that my Mom passed away on New Year&#8217;s Day. Catherine Lemanski was 87.\u00a0 She led a full, long and happy life.\u00a0 She peacefully fell asleep and didn&#8217;t wake up.<\/p><h3>Lessons Learned<\/h3><p>I learned some lessons in the process of losing my Mom.\u00a0 Let me share two of them.<\/p><h3>Know Your Limitations<\/h3><p>As her funeral approached, I knew that my emotions would prevent me from standing up to speak to the congregation. But I needed to share my tribute.\u00a0 So I practiced what I preach. I partially <strong><em>delegated<\/em> <\/strong>the delivery of my tribute to a long time friend and accomplished speaker who eloquently delivered the heartfelt words that I prepared the night before.<\/p><p>Should you find yourself in that situation, I highly recommend the phone-a-friend approach.\u00a0 It honors both your friend and your loved one.\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t that what friends and loved ones are for?<\/p><h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2941 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bridesmaid.jpg\" alt=\"bridesmaid\" width=\"180\" height=\"245\" title=\"\">My Fortunate Farewell<\/h3><p>As I wrote in my funeral tribute&#8230;<\/p><p><em>For all that is good, considerate, generous, caring and thoughtful about me: I credit and thank you.<\/em><\/p><p>Call me a momma&#8217;s boy, if you want. I&#8217;m okay with that.\u00a0 The last words Mom heard from me were&#8230;<\/p><p><em>&#8220;I love you!&#8221;<\/em><\/p><p>While I regret that I didn&#8217;t say those words to her enough, I sleep better knowing I closed on a high note.<\/p><p>I admit that I&#8217;ve historically held back from using those three words. If you do too, ask yourself:<\/p><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Is my reluctance a sign of strength? Or a weakness?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><p>With that, I urge you to be strong enough to demonstrate you genuinely care.\u00a0 You won&#8217;t regret it.<\/p><h3>Shower The People You Love With Love<\/h3><p>I can&#8217;t express it better than the message in this James Taylor song. So I&#8217;ll delegate that also.
