<em>fairy tale<\/em>! \u00a0Instead, it&#8217;s a fairly messy tale with lessons learned at the end and some morals to the story.\r\n<h3>Once upon a time&#8230;<\/h3>\r\nThere was a highly talented high level executive named Bob. Bob found himself with an unexpected advancement opportunity at his publicly traded company. The company had a pending vacancy in the CEO position. \u00a0 A member of the Board approached Bob and said:\r\n<blockquote>&#8220;I believe that you should be a candidate for the CEO position.\u00a0 The company has hired an executive coach to help prepare you for this possibility.&#8221;<\/blockquote>\r\n<h3><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3990 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/decision.jpg\" alt=\"Decision\" width=\"220\" height=\"308\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/decision.jpg 220w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/decision-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>Executive Coaching? Or Something Else?<\/h3>\r\nIn working with his executive coach, Bob confided his apprehensions and insecurities related to the CEO job.\u00a0 It seemed appropriate to candidly discuss his obstacles.\u00a0 And it would have been appropriate if his conversations were held in confidence.\u00a0 They were not.\u00a0 The coach had a hidden agenda: to vet him for the job.\u00a0 So the so-called coaching engagement was more of a job interview than personal and professional development.\u00a0 Shortly after his &#8220;coaching&#8221;, Bob not only did <strong>not<\/strong> get the CEO position, he was demoted.\u00a0 Bob found himself reporting to one of his former staff members. And he took a significant pay cut.\u00a0 Bob&#8217;s confidence and ego were shattered. He spent a shell-shocked year wondering how to salvage his career.\r\n\r\nHe had no doubt that his devastating demotion was a direct result of the coach&#8217;s betrayal.\u00a0 He realized that &#8220;his coach&#8221; wasn&#8217;t <strong><em>his<\/em><\/strong> at all.\u00a0 He was a &#8220;double agent.&#8221;\r\n<h3>Executive Coaching 2.0<\/h3>\r\nFast forward a year later. Bob&#8217;s wife was frustrated watching the downward spiral of both her husband&#8217;s career and his mindset. Her solution?\u00a0 Find Bob a new coach &#8211; \u00a0a professional with <strong>no<\/strong> hidden agenda.\u00a0 She researched sources and convinced Bob to give coaching another try.\r\n<h3>Happy Ending?<\/h3>\r\nWith the help his new coach, Bob gained a deeper appreciation of:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The uniqueness of his talent: Bob IS a great leader.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>His value to an organization (current and future)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The best and highest use of his talent.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nWith that new-found <strong><em>clarity<\/em><\/strong>, his <strong><em>confidence<\/em> <\/strong>returned.\u00a0 Bob regained his swagger.\u00a0 The company went on to hire a new CEO from the outside.\u00a0 (Perhaps their so-called-coach disqualified all of their internal candidates.)\r\n\r\nAfter exploring external job opportunities, Bob stayed with the company.\u00a0 Armed with his new-found talent clarity and his confidence, Bob focused on developing a relationship and a reputation with the new CEO as an engaging executive who <em>gets things done through others<\/em> like few others can.\r\n<h3>The Real Story<\/h3>\r\nAs a coach who <strong><em>does<\/em> <\/strong>value confidentiality, there are only two other things I&#8217;ll share about Bob:\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>He was my client for his 2nd engagement.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><em>Bob<\/em> is <strong>not<\/strong> his real name.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3>Happily Ever After?<\/h3>\r\nIf this was a fairy tale story, everything would go back to the way it was, only better in the end.
