thought my book report days were over.\u00a0 I never imagined that I would ever be compelled to write another one.\u00a0 But, <em>time heals all wounds. <\/em>I&#8217;m writing this one voluntarily.<em><br \/><\/em><\/p><p>I&#8217;ve published numerous posts about Jim Collins&#8217; 2001 business best seller, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0066620996\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0066620996&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=chicaexecuc0b-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Good To Great.<\/em> \u00a0 <\/strong><\/a>Thousands of readers have enjoyed my insights on:<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/filling-bus-good-great-odyssey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Getting the right people on the bus and the wrong people off.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/pursuit-level-5-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Pursuit of Level 5 Leadership<\/a><\/li><li>and <a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/newvista\/good-enemy-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Good Is The Enemy of Great <\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>From the volume of web traffic, I learned that a lot of people were interested in (if not committed to) pursuing greatness.\u00a0 So I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/category\/good-to-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more<\/a>.\u00a0 In 2009, I shared how <a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/good-great-gone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hard times had fallen upon 3 of the book&#8217;s 11 G2G Companies<\/a>. One went bankrupt. Since then, two others (Wells Fargo and Fannie Mae) were involved in the mortgage meltdown. With that, <strong>45% of the <em>elite eleven<\/em> could NOT sustain their <em>great<\/em> financial performances.<\/strong>\u00a0 Of the six remaining, one is tobacco company Phillip Morris.\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t that <em>great<\/em>?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-31715bb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"31715bb\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9b40dbe\" data-id=\"9b40dbe\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43c7a21 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43c7a21\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The first line in <em>Good To Great<\/em> reads&#8221;<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/newvista\/good-enemy-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Good is the Enemy of Great&#8221;\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> <strong><br \/><\/strong><\/h3><p>Sometimes that&#8217;s true.<a title=\"Is Good the Enemy of Great? Or The Reverse?\" href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/is-good-the-enemy-of-great-or-the-reverse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Sometimes the reverse is true<\/a>.\u00a0 In any case, I have hereby hopped <strong>off<\/strong> <strong>the<em> Good To Great bandwagon<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 And, jumped on a new one.\u00a0 My ride was <em>good<\/em>.\u00a0 But there&#8217;s better travels in sight.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Conscious Capitalism<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 I believe it provides leaders with <strong>a more sustainable framework for pursuing prosperity<\/strong>.\u00a0 As with <em>Good To Great<\/em>, <em>Conscious Capitalism<\/em> can <strong>not<\/strong> be a flavor-of-the-month.\u00a0 It requires commitment and transformation in the way you think and act.\u00a0 If it were easy, everyone could do it.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-20ceb37 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"20ceb37\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Let&#8217;s admit sometimes capitalism runs amok. We&#8217;ve witnessed greed driven events like the mortgage meltdown and the Enron implosion.\u00a0 There were a lot of big <strong>losers<\/strong> and very few <strong>winners<\/strong>.\u00a0 These &#8220;greed driven events&#8221; are not unique in the history of capitalism.\u00a0 The Haymarket Riot happened in 1886.\u00a0 At the root of all these examples is:<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The single minded pursuit of PROFIT.<\/em><\/h3><p style=\"text-align: center;\">______________________<\/p><p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1625271751\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=211189&amp;creative=373489&amp;creativeASIN=1625271751&amp;link_code=as3&amp;tag=chicaexecuc0b-20&amp;linkId=Y4L2WCGC6KBT6DGX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conscious Capitalism<\/a><\/em> was published in 2014 and is co-authored by:<\/p><ul><li>John Mackey &#8211; The Co-CEO of Whole Foods Market<\/li><li>Raj Sisodia &#8211; A Leader of the Conscious Capitalism Movement<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4572c40c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4572c40c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6e0b345b\" data-id=\"6e0b345b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fe99ee5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fe99ee5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Pursuit of Profits<\/h3><p>We&#8217;ve listened to Nobel Prize winning economists and other experts speak of the importance of <strong>profits<\/strong> since the Industrial Revolution.\u00a0 Despite their bad name, profits are still a <strong>necessity<\/strong>, not a <strong>luxury<\/strong>.\u00a0 They <em>are<\/em> the fuel for the <em>engine<\/em> of capitalism.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t live without them.\u00a0 But when pursued as the single purpose, your train is more likely to derail.<\/p><p>One of the many profound concepts in the book borrows from Victor Frankel&#8217;s idea that:<\/p><blockquote><h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>&#8220;Happiness is not something to be pursued.\u00a0 It is something that ensues.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/h5><\/blockquote><p style=\"text-align: left;\">They suggest that the same is true for <strong>profits<\/strong>.<\/p><h3>The Four Tenants of Conscious Capitalism<\/h3><p><em>Conscious Capitalism<\/em> goes FAR beyond the idea of <strong><em>doing well by doing good<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Do not dismiss it with that thought. Get it. Read it. It&#8217;s like four books in one as the four tenants are compelling and insightful on their own.<\/p><ul><li><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4340 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Conscious-Business-Tenants.png\" alt=\"Conscious-Business-Tenants\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Conscious-Business-Tenants.png 320w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Conscious-Business-Tenants-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Conscious-Business-Tenants-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/>Higher Purpose:<\/strong>\u00a0 People want to be part of something bigger than themselves.\u00a0 When that <em>bigger thing<\/em> aligns with their values, <a title=\"Are Carrots and Sticks Obsolete?\" href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/are-carrots-and-sticks-obsolete\/\">carrots and sticks become obsolete<\/a>.\u00a0 This is true for company team members, customers and beyond.<\/li><li><strong>Stakeholder Orientation: \u00a0<\/strong>As I shared above, the single minded pursuit of profit is how capitalism can create win-lose scenarios.\u00a0 The multiple stakeholders of any business comprise a delicate ecosystem.\u00a0 Single minded pursuit of profit for profit is replaced by an understanding of the inter-dependance of stakeholders.<\/li><li><strong>Conscious Leadership.<\/strong> \u00a0Management is driven by service to the firm\u2019s higher purpose and focuses on delivering value to the stakeholders. \u00a0Conscious leaders adopt a holistic worldview that goes well beyond the limitations of traditional business. \u00a0Enterprises, and individuals, are part of a complex, interdependent and evolving system with multiple constituencies.<\/li><li><strong>Conscious Culture<\/strong> as captured by the acronym TACTILE.<ul><li>\u00a0T = trust.<\/li><li>A = authenticity.<\/li><li>C = caring.<\/li><li>\u00a0T = transparency.<\/li><li>I = integrity.<\/li><li>L = learning.<\/li><li>E = empowerment.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p>A conscious culture is very tangible to stakeholders and outside observers.<\/p><h3>A Prosperous Portfolio<\/h3><p>I confess that I&#8217;ve not been a &#8220;fan&#8221; or customer of Whole Foods Market. I apparently haven&#8217;t been all that <strong><em>conscious<\/em><\/strong>. So I didn&#8217;t get it. \u00a0But John Mackey has raised my awareness and understanding of their value proposition just as Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz did with his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1609613821\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=211189&amp;creative=373489&amp;creativeASIN=1609613821&amp;link_code=as3&amp;tag=chicaexecuc0b-20&amp;linkId=ZS2QOZCPVFXEPSAJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Onward<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Both books have helped me begin to &#8220;get it&#8221;.<\/p><p>Even <em>unconscious<\/em> capitalists will be impressed by the list of financially successful companies on their list of conscious capitalism practitioners who have prospered over time.<\/p><ul><li>Starbucks<\/li><li>Southwest Airlines &#8211;\u00a0 <a title=\"The Ant, The Lion and The Airline\" href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/the-ant-and-the-lion-a-management-fable\/\">read <strong><em>The Ant, The Lion &amp;
