philosophies and tactics that have come and gone for the past 100 years including&#8230;<\/p><ul><li>Management by Objectives (MBO)<\/li><li>Management by Wandering Around\u00a0 (MBWA) from Tom Peters<\/li><li>Management by Consensus\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/nays-consensus-driven-leadership\/\">why I advise not to try this at work<\/a>)<\/li><li>Theories ranging from Systems to Contingency to Chaos <a href=\"http:\/\/managementhelp.org\/mgmnt\/cntmpory.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(more)<\/a><\/li><li>The ever prevalent micro-management<\/li><\/ul><h2>Introducing: Management By Telepathy<\/h2><p>There is a management system that I&#8217;ve observed in organizations ranging from two partner companies to the Fortune 100. I hereby call it <strong><em>Management By Telepathy<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 This is not one of those new buzzword breakthrough management systems that I would aspire to develop a consulting practice around.\u00a0 Instead it&#8217;s a metaphoric mirror for managers who wonder why their seemly talented staff fails to meet expectations.<\/p><h2>What is <em>Management By Telepathy<\/em>?<\/h2><h4><strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"telepathic\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/telepathic.jpg\" alt=\"Management By Telepathy\" width=\"176\" height=\"130\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.answers.com\/topic\/telepathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telepathy<\/a> is defined as &#8220;<em>Communication through means other than the senses, as by the exercise of an occult power&#8221;<\/em>.\u00a0 So, <strong><em>Management By Telepathy<\/em><\/strong> (MBT) is a style practiced by managers who rely on their people&#8217;s ability to acquire information from non-sensory sources. More simply stated <strong>MBT advocates rely on the mind reading ability of others to get results<\/strong>.\u00a0 Unless they&#8217;ve recruited a staff of clairvoyants, Management By Telepathy practitioners are typically playing a lose-lose game of &#8220;<em>Stump The Chump<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Their chumps then need folks like <em>Carnac The Magnificent <\/em>to figure things out.<\/p><h2>Why is MBT So Prevalent?<\/h2><p>If it&#8217;s such an inherently futile philosophy, why is it so widely practiced?\u00a0 Occasionally, subordinates of MBTs are either lucky or clever enough to figure things out on their own.\u00a0 The practice is validated.\u00a0 Mind reading ability is falsely accepted as a universally attainable skill.\u00a0 Assuming clairvoyance is also supported by some reasonable assumptions and beliefs like&#8230;<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Most people, given the same information, will come very close to the same conclusions.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>&#8211; from Ray Overdorff&#8217;s Six Truths of the Workplace<br \/><\/em><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-837 alignleft\" title=\"point\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/point.jpg\" alt=\"Pointing\" width=\"117\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/point.jpg 195w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/point-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 117px) 100vw, 117px\" \/>The issue for telepathic managers is when others don&#8217;t have the same information, their conclusions <em>will<\/em> vary.\u00a0 These managers then seek to place full blame for the information gap on others.\u00a0 Whenever you point a finger there are always three others pointing in the other direction.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Two Common Symptoms of <em>Management By Telepathy<\/em> Practitioners<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/h2><h5>1. &#8211; They Suffer from &#8220;The Curse of Knowledge&#8221;<\/h5><p><em>Management By Telepathy<\/em> practitioners often suffer from The Curse of Knowledge. And the smarter you are, the more likely you are to be cursed by your knowledge. When attempting to communicate with those who lack your frame of reference or depth of knowledge and understanding, you assume you are getting through.\u00a0 And you know the dangers when you ASSUME.\u00a0 You&#8217;re unable to recognize that others lack your frame of reference. So you&#8217;re unaware of the need to enhance or adjust your communication.\u00a0 When others are not &#8220;<em>given the same information<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Their conclusions will vary.\u00a0 And, results will suffer.<\/p><h5>2. &#8211; Inability to articulate &#8220;Why&#8221;<\/h5><p>It may be a fair assumption that your people should have the skills to do their jobs.\u00a0 For them to effectively make decisions on <em>what <\/em>to do and <em>when <\/em>to do it depends on a clear understanding of <em>why<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 And if you believe that &#8220;<em>because I said so<\/em>&#8221; is reason enough, first be certain that you&#8217;ve actually said so and second, understand that first rate execution requires more than that. Have you been assigning tasks? Or delegating responsibility for a clearly stated, beneficial outcome?<\/p><p>Can you begin to understand the reason that those three fingers are pointing back in your direction.<\/p><h4>Management By Commitment<\/h4><p>When your people are continually achieving more goals more often, you can take your business where ever you want it to go.\u00a0 This can not occur with Management By Telepathy.\u00a0 There must be <em>Management By Commitment<\/em>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the essence of <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/about\/what-is-working-smart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Working SMART<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-244e4a9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"244e4a9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-bcb9277\" data-id=\"bcb9277\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34c767a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"34c767a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>A Word from our Sponsor<\/h3><p><em>Management By Telepathy<\/em> is already too prevalent.
