I&#8217;ve grown to value its importance to executive success\u00a0for both leaders and the people they lead.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Role Awareness Defined<\/h3>\r\n<blockquote>Role Awareness is the ability to be aware of your\u00a0role in the world or within a given\u00a0environment. \u00a0Simply restated:\u00a0before you\u00a0can determine the path to an\u00a0objective (develop your <em>self-direction<\/em>), you need to be clear about the\u00a0answer to this all-important question:\r\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is the job objective?<\/strong><\/h4>\r\nIt seems so\u00a0elementary. \u00a0Why is this even an issue? \u00a0The fact is <em><strong>low role awareness<\/strong><\/em> happens far more than you could imagine.\r\n<h4>What&#8217;s happening when Role Awareness is Low?<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>You likely lack understanding of your job role<\/li>\r\n \t<li>You can be unclear or uninformed of expectations<\/li>\r\n \t<li>You may not ask for clarification of your role or responsibilities<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><\/h3>\r\n<h3>What&#8217;s the Root Cause of Low Role Awareness?<\/h3>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5148 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"confused\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/confused.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I continue to believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/miscommunication-and-dysfunction\/\"><strong><em>miscommunication is at the root of all dysfunction<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0An effective communication of job objectives\u00a0is\u00a0the exception rather than the rule. \u00a0What happens?\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Written Job Descriptions (if they exist at all) are frequently lists of tasks fail to\u00a0include\u00a0measurable, prioritized responsibilities.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Workers are reluctant to ask for clarification.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>When workers do ask for clarification, they don&#8217;t receive a workable answer.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nAll to often we provide\u00a0our new hire\u00a0a <strong>job title<\/strong>, a <strong>desk<\/strong> and an <strong>in-basket.<\/strong>\u00a0Then\u00a0expect the new hire to figure things out.\u00a0Then they get\u00a0slammed in their annual review. \u00a0We\u00a0call this game\u00a0<em><strong>Stump The Chump<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a game with no winners.\r\n<h3>Leading Small Cogs in the Big Wheel<\/h3>\r\nWe&#8217;re often\u00a0challenged to lead people who play minor parts in the grander scheme. \u00a0But their jobs exist for a reason. \u00a0How frequently\u00a0do you help them understand the importance of that reason?\r\n\r\nAll jobs have their tasks. \u00a0How have you offered criteria to help them to prioritize those tasks?
