global brand of the <em>gangster city<\/em> perpetrated by Al Capone in the 1920s and 30s. In the 90&#8217;s, we made some progress as global sport fans were polarized by Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls.<\/p><p>Now in 2011, Chicago&#8217;s image may be poised for another global PR boost. Michael Jordan&#8217;s old team is now led by a humble but talented 22 year old Chicago native, Derrick Rose. While it remains to be seen the extent that Mr. Rose can build on Michael Jordan&#8217;s legacy, this young man has already provided us with an inspiring lesson in both self leadership and formal leadership.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a15daa6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a15daa6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">From Good To Great<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19124a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19124a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Most business people are familiar with Jim Collins&#8217; best selling book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0066620996?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=vistadevel-20&amp;link_code=as3&amp;camp=211189&amp;creative=373489&amp;creativeASIN=0066620996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good To Great<\/a><\/em> that documented the common elements of 11 companies who did so in spectacular fashion. Before <em>Good To Great,<\/em> Jim Collins authored <em>Built To Last<\/em> that examined companies that were great from the start. One common &#8220;<em>Built To Last<\/em>&#8221; characteristic is a <strong><em>Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal<\/em><\/strong> or &#8220;BHAG&#8221;. And so it is with Derrick Rose who used a BHAG to drive his personal transformation from good to great.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c511fb6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c511fb6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">BHAG = MVP<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a099457 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a099457\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As 2010-11 season began pro basketball was haunted by the media circus I called the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/king-james-queen-for-a-day-pageant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King James &#8220;Queen For A Day&#8221; Pageant<\/a>. At the Chicago Bulls annual pre-season press conference, Derrick Rose was asked about his goals for the season. His reply was considered by most as an over ambitious and unrealistic. Here was a 6 foot 3 inch, tall 22 year old athlete playing a giant man&#8217;s sport asking &#8220;<em><strong>Why can&#8217;t I&#8230;?<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; There were numerous reasons in the minds of the experts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb05256 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"eb05256\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/youtu.be\\\/s3NVmn51zE0&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-78b93dfc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"78b93dfc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4dc4b848\" data-id=\"4dc4b848\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07cf3ce elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"07cf3ce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Who Believed?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cbe1017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6cbe1017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1665\" title=\"DR-2\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DR-2.jpg\" alt=\"Rose\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><span style=\"background-color: white; color: black;\">At the time, the press conference remarks were mostly dismissed as those of an overoptimistic kid. Top 10 player status seemed obtainable. But the best in the league? Not likely. No player that young had ever won pro basketball&#8217;s MVP award. The fact that no one really believed him did not matter near as much as the fact that Rose deeply believed it himself. And therein lies the lesson for us all as that optimistic kid became &#8220;the man&#8221;. In winning the 2011 MVP award, Rose is youngest player to win the honor. His team was &#8220;believed&#8221; by most to be the 4th or 5th best in the league. Rose led them to the league&#8217;s best record.<\/span><\/p><p>While he is not likely a Jim Collins follower, Rose has a strong support system that helps him to understand that <a href=\"https:\/\/vista-development.com\/good-enemy-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>good is the enemy of great<\/em><\/a>. And in the words of Henry Ford, &#8220;<em>Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><p>Have you ever worked in an organization where everyone believed the <a title=\"Attainability in SMART Goals\" href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/attainability-in-smart-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goals were unattainable<\/a>? How did that affect your ability to pursue them? While it may sound trite, <em>you gotta believe<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3e51a5a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3e51a5a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-987f2d4\" data-id=\"987f2d4\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2eb5291 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2eb5291\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Can't You?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32cc2f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32cc2f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Is there a BHAG that you could pursue that challenges your ability to believe that it&#8217;s possible? What is it? Is it committed to writing? Might you muster some inspiration from the achievement of this 22 year old BHAG achiever? He asked the question and answered with an unwavering belief that there was NO reason why not. Why can&#8217;t you?<\/p><p>Your Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal is only attainable if you believe it. If you seek more inspiration, consider the words of Napoleon Hill from <em>Law of Success<\/em>. Consider the lofty trophy in your life.
