the <strong><em>Chicago Executive Coaching<\/em><\/strong> brand since 2006. \u00a0<em>Kinda<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_6734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6734\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6734 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/hat-150x135.png\" alt=\"Plain Hat\" width=\"150\" height=\"135\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/hat-150x135.png 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/hat.png because I was really giving <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/lip-service-and-your-reputation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lip Service<\/a> to the effort.\u00a0 I once successfully led the re-building of a consumer product company in the late 90&#8217;s. \u00a0I regularly collaborated with graphic designers on product packaging and catalogs for the product line. \u00a0Some of our packaging received design\u00a0award nominations. \u00a0Our quality designs helped us to gain valuable shelf space at major retail chains.\r\n\r\nDespite that knowledge and expertise, 2017 marked Chicago Executive Coaching&#8217;s 11th year without a legit\u00a0logo. \u00a0I was aware of the missing piece. \u00a0I habitually ignored the issue. \u00a0My professional services brand was like the barefooted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usingenglish.com\/reference\/idioms\/the+shoemaker%27s+son+always+goes+barefoot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shoemaker&#8217;s son<\/a>. Logo design\u00a0was one of those projects that I&#8217;d take care of when<em> I <strong>got around to it<\/strong><\/em><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 How many underwhelmed prospective clients silently moved on? I&#8217;ll never know.\u00a0I certainly knew that my branding was missing some important pieces. \u00a0But I swept the issue under the rug.\r\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/tackling-tough-tasks\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1243 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/tuit.jpg\" alt=\"Round TUIT\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" title=\"\"><\/a>The Round TUIT, Wake-Up Call Moment<\/h2>\r\nA few months ago, I had a\u00a0marketing conversation with a\u00a0young professional who works for a large professional services firm. \u00a0I received some really candid criticism of my marketing materials. \u00a0He was highly critical of my self-designed business cards and the poor mobile rendering of my website. \u00a0Full disclosure; the young critic was my son, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kevinlemanski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThe criticism was embarrassing as\u00a0I immediately knew he was on target. \u00a0I knew that<em> you never get a second chance to make a first impression<\/em>. \u00a0And when it comes to graphic design, a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. \u00a0Simply having PhotoShop skills doesn&#8217;t make a person a proficient graphic designer. What was I thinking? \u00a0I got my <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/tackling-tough-tasks\/\">Round TUIT<\/a>. Getting a professionally designed logo moved to the top of the task list.\r\n<h2>New School Solution for an Old School Marketer<\/h2>\r\nI&#8217;d heard about <em>Crowd Sourcing<\/em> as a approach to securing graphic designs. \u00a0It&#8217;s an internet service that facilitates competition with designers from around the world. Designers submit designs on speculation. \u00a0If you pick the\u00a0winner, that designer wins the contest and gets paid. The losers receive\u00a0nothing.\r\n\r\nI knew about a local company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdspring.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CrowdSpring<\/a>. \u00a0Another, <a href=\"https:\/\/99designs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">99Designs<\/a>, was also recommended. \u00a0 I chose the later. \u00a0They had better reviews and a nice system for submitting my project parameters. I utilized their\u00a0system for polling acquaintances to gain outside opinions via virtual focus group. \u00a0The process progressed to the point where I chose the final six designers. Then came the first speed bump. \u00a0One of my favorites of the six designer finalists, was abruptly disqualified\/kicked off the system for a <em>terms of service violation<\/em>. Her design entries disappeared. \u00a0That annoyance was quickly remedied with a phone call. The offender was reinstated for my project.\r\n\r\nI then did more polling which convinced me to put the reinstated designer into 2nd place. \u00a0I had a winner. \u00a0I thought. \u00a0But not so fast. \u00a0The winner refused to move forward because the bitter, 2nd place finisher logged a complaint about use of generic content. \u00a0It was like the <em>virtual pot<\/em> calling the <em>virtual kettle<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;black&#8221;. \u00a0That delay was also remedied within a day by another phone call. \u00a0To the credit of 99Designs, they have competent customer service folks\u00a0who\u00a0answer the phone during US business hours.\r\n<h2>The Winner<\/h2>\r\nI finished the procurement process made an executive decision. \u00a0The shoemaker&#8217;s son has a new pair of shoes. \u00a0Thanks to all who participated in the polling and feedback process.\r\n\r\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6730\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/CEC-logo200h.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"200\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/CEC-logo200h.jpg 350w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/CEC-logo200h-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/CEC-logo200h-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>\r\n\r\nHere are some takeaways from <em>The Logo Saga<\/em> that you might find useful\u00a0or amusing. Ideally\u00a0both.\r\n<h3>Back To School: Old or New?<\/h3>\r\nWhere will I go for my next graphic design project? \u00a0Crowd Sourcing was a worthy experiment. \u00a0 My negatives:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>There was a slight language barrier with most of the designers, who I believe were from places like Malaysia.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>There was a lot of copying of design concepts submitted by competing designers once they could see positive\u00a0ratings. \u00a0Having paid for an upgraded talent pool, that was discouraging. The 400+ entries were a lot of mediocre stuff thrown up against the wall to see what would stick.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nCrowd Sourcing failed to deliver bang for the buck and the levels of quality and creativity that I imagined. My issue with the\u00a0the system is:\r\n<blockquote>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>How many top-notch graphic designers are willing to create quality work without a promise to be paid?<\/strong><\/blockquote>\r\nI believe the answer today is &#8220;not enough&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s true that winning contests can lead to new customers who buy more. \u00a0But, how loyal are those customers? \u00a0For some designers, creating speculative designs\u00a0is a more productive activity than waiting for the phone to ring. \u00a0My selection created a &#8220;win&#8221; for a nameless, faceless designer with a screen name on the other side of the world.\r\n\r\nI&#8217;m not disappointed with my result. Just not yet sold on the approach. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.\r\n\r\nOverall, I\u00a0missed the collaboration and synergy of working with a trusted, talented designer. \u00a0When it&#8217;s time to go back to the drawing board, I&#8217;ll chose to collaborate with local talent. \u00a0Once again, less is more.\r\n<h2>Lessons Learned<\/h2>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>We have a lot of tools to secure services virtually. \u00a0But just because you <strong><em>can<\/em><\/strong>, doesn&#8217;t mean you <strong><em>should<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>When it comes to procrastinating on potentially important marketing decisions, do as I advise. Not as I&#8217;ve done. \u00a0Solicit feedback, evaluate the business validity\u00a0and execute.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Sometimes we tend to filter\u00a0advise and criticism we get from significantly younger people. And when you once changed his dirty diapers, the filtering is more intense. \u00a0But at some point, you can actually get valuable (tough love?) business advise from your children. \u00a0Especially once they&#8217;ve earned advanced degrees and corporate experience. \u00a0In the words of Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ztVaqZajq-I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Teach your children well&#8221;<\/a>. I regularly collaborated with graphic designers on product packaging and catalogs for the product line.  Some of our packaging received design award nominations.  It helped us to gain valuable shelf space at major retail chains.  Despite that knowledge and expertise, 2017 marked my 11th year without a legit logo.  I was aware of the missing piece.  I habitually ignored the issue.
