Train<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 0.9375em;\">Last week. I was comfortably seated on an outbound Metra commuter train headed home after a productive day in the city.\u00a0 Suddenly my comfort was disrupted by the man seated in front of me.\u00a0 He began coughing.\u00a0 His was no ordinary <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 0.9375em;\">cough<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 0.9375em;\">.\u00a0 It reminded me of the sleepless nights we had when our children had <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 0.9375em;\">croup<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 0.9375em;\">. He&#8217;d suppress it for a while.\u00a0 Then it would start up again.\u00a0 His involuntary act instantly impacted my attitude.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7045 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guy-CoughingLG-mso.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"417\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guy-CoughingLG-mso.jpg 623w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guy-CoughingLG-mso-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guy-CoughingLG-mso-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Beyond the <em>croup-y cough<\/em> flash backs, his intermittent coughing triggered an assortment of emotions.<\/p><ul><li>I was annoyed from being disrupted from my reading.<\/li><li>I was fearful of what kind of virus that I might be catching.<\/li><li>I was angry; wishing that this guy had stayed home from work to both take care of himself and avoid spreading this nasty infection.<\/li><li>I even found some empathy for him as I remembered a time when I had to fly home on two separate flights with a terrible cold and pockets full of Kleenex. I likely triggered similar feelings with my seat mates.<\/li><\/ul><h2>Your Infectiousness<\/h2><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7046 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/germ-mask-mso-150x143.jpg\" alt=\"Mask\" width=\"150\" height=\"143\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/germ-mask-mso-150x143.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/germ-mask-mso-300x287.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/germ-mask-mso.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Our coughing, sniffling and sneezing are obvious signals to both ourselves and others that we&#8217;re potentially infecting others.\u00a0 As a leader, your attitudes are just as infectious. They are more easily spread.\u00a0 \u00a0Your anger, enthusiasm, skepticism and fear have a gripping effect on the people around you.\u00a0 Your attitude and expressions of emotion are highly infectious and can easily <em>go viral<\/em> within your team and organization.<\/p><p>Health care workers and others who know they are being exposed to harmful germs or bacteria will wear masks for their protection. If you&#8217;re the source of the potential infection, this is a visual reminder of the potential danger you pose.\u00a0 When the people you lead know they are being exposed to potentially toxic doses of your attitude, they put on their invisible masks. There may be some signs of this. But you need to learn to recognize them.\u00a0 More often, you&#8217;re unaware of how contagious you are. So<span style=\"font-size: 0.9375em;\">\u00a0I&#8217;ll repeat my question:<\/span><\/p><blockquote><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">What are People Catching from You?<\/h3><\/blockquote><h2>Don&#8217;t Be That Leader!<\/h2><p>The late Zig Ziglar spoke about the diminishing effects of <em>negativity<\/em>.\u00a0 He described a negative person who had the ability to &#8220;<strong><em>instantly brighten up a room: by leaving it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Such negative people are oblivious to their infectiousness. Are you?
