integrity is an essential requirement for being an effective leader. \u00a0 There are some powerful definitions for Integrity:<\/p><ul><li>Say what you do. Do what you say<\/li><li>Keeping your promises<\/li><li>Doing the right thing when no one is watching<\/li><\/ul><p>Being known as a person who always keeps your stated promises will serve help you to gain and support a reputation as a\u00a0 <em>go-to<\/em> person.\u00a0 The operative word here is &#8220;stated&#8221;.\u00a0 Many people slip up when they fail to honor their <em><strong>implied <\/strong><\/em>promises.\u00a0 One of our most common implied promises is showing up on time.<\/p><h4><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7596 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Time-Check350cc-300x201.png\" alt=\"Punctuality\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Time-Check350cc-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Time-Check350cc-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/Time-Check350cc.png 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Reputation Erosion <\/strong><\/h4><p>I believe that showing up late for a meeting conveys disrespect for the people you have <em>promised <\/em>to meet with.\u00a0\u00a0 When you show up late, you&#8217;re silently stating to your meeting partners that other activities took priority over them.\u00a0 What does this do to the status of your integrity?\u00a0 &#8230;to your ability to build trust and rapport? &#8230;.to your reputation as a reliable, go-to person?<\/p><p>There are excuses for tardiness.\u00a0 But as a leader, do you really want to use the word &#8220;good&#8221; as an adjective for excuse?<\/p><h4><strong>Punctuality Coaching from a Legend <\/strong><\/h4><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-818\" title=\"lombardi-time\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/lombardi-time.jpg\" alt=\"Lombardi On Time\" width=\"140\" height=\"184\" \/>If I&#8217;ve helped you gain a greater appreciation for punctuality, let me now defer to Hall of Fame Football Coach Vince Lombardi.\u00a0 Coach Lombardi was known for instilling discipline that supported precise execution.\u00a0 His punctuality philosophy became know as &#8220;Lombardi Time&#8221;.<\/p><p><em>&#8220;According to former players, Vince Lombardi had a special version of time \u2013 one that ran 15 minutes earlier than any normal clock. \u00a0If the meeting began at 9:00 a.m., one needed to be present and ready to get started at 8:45, no questions asked.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before learning of <em>Lombardi Time<\/em>, I learned an affirmation that applied the same concept: <em><strong>&#8220;If I&#8217;m not 10 minutes early, I&#8217;m late.&#8221; <\/strong><\/em><\/p><h4><strong>Broken Punctuality Promises?<\/strong><\/h4><p>Occasionally there are higher priorities than showing up on time for the next meeting.\u00a0 Or there can be unforeseen weather and traffic related challenges.\u00a0 When these occur, I recommend a preemptive approach. Avoid rubbing salt into the wound. Make the first phone call.\u00a0 Never leave your meeting partners sitting around looking at their watches.<\/p><p>For those of you who plan to meet with me in the future, my promise is now documented.
