orientation<\/strong><\/em> is a requirement for nearly EVERY job.\u00a0 And, nearly every job candidate claims or believes that they qualify as a detail orientated person.\u00a0 I believe that both of these assumptions are more often FALSE than they&#8217;re true.\n<h2>Good News and Bad News about Your Detail Orientation<\/h2>\nYou&#8217;re likely not as detail orientated as you believe. Sorry.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s probably OK. It might actually be a good thing. Except when it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 Let me explain.\n\nNo one wants to be someone who allows important things to fall through the cracks. Who would want to hire or promote that person?\u00a0 In reality, different jobs and roles require different levels of attention to detail.\n<h4><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7259\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/scrutinize-wiki-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"Detail Orientation\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/scrutinize-wiki-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/scrutinize-wiki-150x96.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/scrutinize-wiki.jpg 518w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Jobs that require extremely high levels of attention to detail:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Bomb Squad Technicians<\/li>\n \t<li>Attorneys who either examine or create long, detailed contracts and legal documents.<\/li>\n \t<li>Aircraft Mechanics<\/li>\n \t<li>Surgeons who perform intricate procedures<\/li>\n \t<li>Actuaries<\/li>\n \t<li>Safety Inspectors<\/li>\n \t<li>Auditors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nYou&#8217;re probably thinking of your own examples.\u00a0These jobs require people who are\u00a0<strong>meticulous<\/strong> and <strong>rigorous <\/strong>with their approach to the most <strong>minute details<\/strong>.\u00a0 Does that describe you?\n<h2>Are You REALLY the Detail Orientated Person You Claim to Be?<\/h2>\nIf you&#8217;re doing a job similar to those above, you probably are <strong><em>highly<\/em><\/strong> <strong>detail orientated<\/strong>. If not, allow me to ask:\n\nCan you admit that you&#8217;re <em><strong>not<\/strong> <\/em>someone who enjoys unending hours of working on long, complicated procedures or written documents?\n\nI hereby grant you permission to admit:\n<blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>That&#8217;s not me!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Liberation is at Hand!<\/h2>\nIf you can genuinely make that admission, you are liberated and even <em><strong>blessed<\/strong><\/em> to get more done without the constraints of:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Endless pursuit of unattainable perfection<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Analysis paralysis<\/em><\/li>\n \t<li>Fear of making a mistake<\/li>\n \t<li>Constantly scrutinizing<\/li>\n \t<li>Getting all ducks in a row before getting started<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe higher your level of detail orientation, the more likely you will have these constraints to getting things done.\u00a0 If you can sign up for <strong><em>&#8220;That&#8217;s not me&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>, imagine how much more you can accomplish than those who are!\u00a0 You can now admit that don&#8217;t want their job and they don&#8217;t want yours.\n<h2>A <em>Blessing<\/em> and a <em>Curse<\/em><\/h2>\nWhile I advise that you admit your lower level of detail orientation to <em>yourself<\/em>, be careful about publicizing it to others who are less enlightened about the related virtues. That liberation gained by <em>doing more<\/em> comes with also admitting:\n<ul>\n \t<li>You tend to skim over complexities<\/li>\n \t<li>You&#8217;re prone to allow seemingly minor details to fall through the cracks.<\/li>\n \t<li>And, you tend to take things at face value with little scrutiny.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nHow might you leverage this self awareness to help you recognize critical warning signs along the way?\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7263\" src=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/complexity_ahead_sign.png\" alt=\"Complexity Caution Sign\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/complexity_ahead_sign.png 240w, https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/complexity_ahead_sign-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Responding to Warning Signs<\/h2>\nWhen you&#8217;re aware of these potentially hazardous conditions where errors and oversights are not an option, you&#8217;re free to choose from these three options:\n<ul>\n \t<li>\n<h5>Muster up the patience, energy and extra attention to detail needed to address the finer points of the situation. Pump the brakes on your normal tendencies, grit your teeth and dive in.<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n \t<li>\n<h5>Seek Professional Help: find someone with the needed high level of expertise and detail orientation to get the job done right the first time.<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n \t<li>\n<h4>Ignore all warning signs and throw caution to the winds.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nHow are you most inclined to act?\n\nIt&#8217;s OK to say &#8220;<strong><em>that&#8217;s not me&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 As long as you recognize that some situations demand that you either notch things up and temporarily become the <em>persnickety person<\/em>\u00a0that the task requires or engage an expert who loves using their fine tooth comb.\n\nThese are times when ignoring a complexity warning is really risky. To minimize the risk, remember there are experts available who actually ENJOY\u00a0taking a deep dive for a closer look. If <em>that&#8217;s not you<\/em>, who is it?\n<h2>This is NOT a Test<\/h2>\nIt is an awareness exercise. Allow me to share a completely inappropriate test question.\n<blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">I am a detail orientated person: True or False<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\nIt&#8217;s not a matter of being true or false. It&#8217;s not black or white but different shades of gray. <em>\u00a0<\/em>We&#8217;re all at different levels at different levels at different times. Whether or not you can say &#8220;<em>that&#8217;s not me<\/em>&#8220;&#8230;\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">High levels of detail orientation should be situational.<\/h4>\nYou should all be aware of your personal inclinations and the\u00a0 degree of detail difficulty that a situation demands.\u00a0 That awareness enables you to recognize your warning signs and respond with an appropriate level.\n<blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>To grind or not to grind? That is the question.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>My Personal Confession and Case Study<\/h2>\nI hope this helps you. I hereby admit: &#8220;<strong><em>That&#8217;s not me&#8221;.<\/em><\/strong>\n\nDon&#8217;t ask me to audit your books or make contract recommendations. Not that I can&#8217;t. I have with some success. But I don&#8217;t like that stuff.\u00a0\u00a0If you read my posts regularly, you&#8217;ve likely discovered an assortment of typos or grammatical errors.\u00a0 There are a here.\u00a0 Did you catch them?\u00a0 If so, feel free to let me know.\n\nI admit I <em><strong>love<\/strong> <\/em>to create and <strong><em>hate<\/em><\/strong> to proof read.\u00a0 I do like to tinker with words. I often go back and tweak my sentences.\u00a0 This generates more errors as eagerness to <em>move on<\/em>\u00a0and get done saps my patience to go back and proof read and scrutinize.\u00a0 To address this discipline lapse, I have utilized my recommended choices: either self-regulate or delegate.\u00a0 Sometimes I muster up the patience to be persnickety enough to carefully read my creations from top to bottom.\u00a0 That doesn&#8217;t always happen. As I attempt to meet my self imposed publishing goals and deadlines, I get sloppy. This just in:\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Haste Makes Waste.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nI have asked for the help of several detail orientated friends.\u00a0 But you get what you pay
