this intriguing request.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0de70d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0de70d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want this to get touchy-feely.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-118d90f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"118d90f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On the surface, this is a potential challenge for a leadership coach.\u00a0 One of the most important aspects of a coach-client relationship is <strong><em>connection<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Does that mean getting <em>touchy-feely<\/em>?\u00a0 It depends on what that term really means to the person making request.\u00a0 There are similarities between a coach&#8217;s role and a leader&#8217;s role. So let&#8217;s take a closer look at the possible rewards and consequences with a<em> touchy-feely<\/em> approach to communication.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f906fac elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f906fac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Touchy Approach<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b27ec77 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b27ec77\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I have no issue steering clear of the <strong><em>touchy<\/em> <\/strong>part. The touchy part was always out-of-bounds for me. In fact, interactions via video conferencing have proven to be highly effective without handshakes or fist bumps.\u00a0 Between the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoexecutivecoaching.com\/smartleadership\/handshakes-hugs-kisses-metoo-greeting-mishap-guidelines\/\">Me-Too movement<\/a> and the Pandemic, there&#8217;s justifiably more resistance to touching than ever.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>But, be careful about using the term <em><strong>touchy-feely<\/strong><\/em> to bundle the two approaches in an attempt to avoid either.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-694145e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"694145e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Feely Approach<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6abbfc1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6abbfc1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As for the <strong><em>feely<\/em><\/strong> part I wonder:\u00a0 Is this a request to take the topic of <strong><em>emotions<\/em> <\/strong>off the table completely?<\/p><p>If we understand that all decisions are inherently emotional, how do you conduct a coaching engagement without helping the leader gain clarity about the <strong>emotional<\/strong> component of <strong><em>decision making<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0How can you effectively lead?<\/p><p>Is this also a request to avoid feeling <em><strong>uncomfortable<\/strong><\/em>?\u00a0 That&#8217;s another obstacle to becoming a better leader.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re not willing to experience uncomfortable discussions with your coach, you may be un-coachable.\u00a0 \u00a0Do you have a habit of avoiding uncomfortable discussions with those you lead? If so, how can you hold them accountable?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4701c14 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4701c14\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-203353d\" data-id=\"203353d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4698a00 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4698a00\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How Does a Coach or Leader Approach Touchy-Feely?\u00a0 \u00a0<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ae1b95 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ae1b95\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are good reasons for someone to say they want to avoid <em>touchy-feely<\/em>.\u00a0 I would first seek to <em>understand and respect the request. <\/em>Something about you or their view of the situation triggered it. If not, how will development occur?<\/p><p><i><b>Touchy <\/b><\/i>moments are neither required or desirable.\u00a0 But <b><i>feeling <\/i><\/b>uncomfortable with the status quo is highly recommended when improvement is the mutual goal. But we need to getting <em><strong>feely<\/strong> <\/em>with a green light (mutual consent or understanding).\u00a0 Running a red light will derail the discussion.\u00a0 .\u00a0
