What Are The First Three?

In 2010, I shared my Three Cs of Success on this site.  It discussed three intangibles we need to effectively pursue our goals and dreams:

  1. Clarity
  2. Confidence
  3. Commitment

Re-Dos

he late Stephen R. Covey published his classic, best seller The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People in 1989.   It took a while for him to discover there was an important omission.  Fifteen years later he published The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.

As with Covey’s 8th Habit, I’ve discovered another “C” that is so essential to success that I’m compelled to publish this addendum, The 4th C for Success.

What is The 4th C to Success?

courage

It’s courage.  As children, we all learned the importance of courage from the Cowardly Lion character in The Wizard of Oz.  As the Lion overcame his fears to help rescue Dorothy and secure the broom from the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wizard rewarded him with a metal of courage.

In the case of the cowardly lion, courage was a virtue that he had suppressed.  But it was buried inside.  The mission to rescue Dorothy and the support of his companions provided him with the clarityconfidence and commitment he needed to muster the courage required to succeed.  The Hero’s Metal that The Wizard awarded him gave him validation.

Courageous Words of Wisdom

While the Cowardly Lion is a fictional animal character, his struggle to find courage is a challenge frequently faced by all of us humans.  We can all become paralyzed by fear.  Here’s some inspiration on the topic.

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”  – Dale Carnegie
“There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.”  – John F. Kennedy

3 + 1 = More

As you and your followers pursue the important things on your agenda, remember your four prerequisites:

  1. Clarity
  2. Confidence
  3. Commitment
  4. Courage

Don’t leave home without them!
