In our daily travels, we all have fork-in-the-road moments. Some are large. Some small. We can go with the flow. Or, take a more challenging new route. How do you decide?
A coaching client once confided that he was becoming more inclined to wimp-out and do nothing when facing new, more venturesome opportunities. He asked how he could become more adventurous. My answer came in the form of two questions:
When you lack prioritized goals, how can you effectively decide when to take the off-ramp to adventure and challenge? When should you play it safe? The essence of effective time management is the ability to put first things first. To do that, you need clarity about what’s important to you. If you don’t, you get sucked in to working on other people’s agendas.
If you lack the desire to maintain a high quality of life with your immediate family, are you more or less likely to resist the temptation to have an extra-marital affair?
If you lack the ambition to get promoted or gain positive review, why would you go the extra mile for those you serve? Why stick your neck out? So you stay on the Main Highway.
As you face any key decision, ask yourself: Is what I’m about to do taking me closer of further away from achieving my most important goals?
When you can’t effectively answer that question, how will you ever find your way to Gainsville?
