Moving Up The Corporate Ladder

Getting promoted to a higher position requires three things:

  1. Becoming the person who is worthy of a higher position
  2. Decision makers and their influencers must believe that you are promote-able and capable of achieving more at a higher level
  3. A job opportunity exists that fits your abilities or potential

Clearing The Three Hurdles to Getting Promoted

hurdle

To clear these three hurdles, ask and answer these related questions.

  • What kind of leader do I need to become to be worthy of the next level?
  • What skills do I need to develop?
  • What habits do I need to change?
  • How can I develop a more effective mindset?
  • How do I create the perception that I’m promote-able?
  • What should my next opportunity look like?

As you seek to improve others’ perceptions of your talent and influence their beliefs, consider your present situation and understand…

Zig Ziglar

Your Ultimate Job Responsibility

The late, great motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar gave us these words to professionally live by.

You can have everything in life you want if you’ll just help enough other people to get what they want!

Assuming that your boss wants to look good and succeed:

Your job is to make your boss look good and succeed.

When you want to advance your career, what else is more important?  When your boss recognizes your genuine commitment to his/her success, what happens to your level of trust?  What happens to your boss’s desire to reciprocate and help facilitate your success?

Creating Opportunity

Hurdle #3 above: A job opportunity exists that fits your abilities or potential.

While this hurdle might seem impossible it may merely be your perception (or your superiors’ perception).  Raise your opportunity awareness by observing and asking:

  • What potentially important things are routinely falling through the cracks?
  • What part of the status-quo needs to change the most?
  • How are you qualified to lead the needed change?
  • How can you make a business case for pursuing these opportunities?

Attitude Development

It almost goes without mentioning.  But the job applicant’s entitled mindset in the cartoon below is all too prevalent today.  How can you show that you’re the opposite of this guy?
