I believe that we all get caught up in scenarios where Benjamin Franklin’s concept of insanity applies:
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
So I’m compelled to share some ways to regain our sanity. We must:
For most changes, this is easier said than done. In helping executives to implement positive behavior change, I’ve learned that I can’t help those who don’t want to help themselves. When I am engaged by an intermediary or third party to help or “fix” someone, I tread carefully. I understand that “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear“. And while I have effective tools and skills stoking people’s internal fire, there must be at least a spark to begin with. I have developed the strong belief:
So, let me share a way to discover your why.
Last year I discovered a book with some game changing insight on people’s motives and actions. The insight can be applied to improve communications in leadership, marketing and every day life. The book is Simon Sinek’s Start With Why. I’ve read stacks of business books. My copy of Start With Why has more yellow highlighter ink on its pages than any book I’ve read since college. I’ve become an evangelist for Simon Sinek and the book’s concepts. It’s hard to explain “why”, other than we have some strong shared beliefs. Because I believe that his message can be a game changer for those leading change, I share this video of presenting an overview of Start With Why.
The video is 18 minutes long. If you haven’t read the book or currently lack the time to invest in viewing or reading the book, I strongly recommend that you come back to this page when you can. My clients and friends who view it typically go back to listen multiple times. Meanwhile, I will share his most repeated line. “People don’t buy what you do (or want to do). They buy why you do it“.
As you seek to help others to avoid or overcome the insanity of doing the same thing repeatedly, remember: when there is no why, there is no way. Your “why” can be the key that unlocks your own motivation and that of others.
